Music Makers Premier Adult Band Ensemble Program will enhance your understanding of how a band works.  We’ll break down the songs in detail, stretch out, learn beginnings & endings, refine solos, rhythms, patterns & leads.  You’ll gain control over sound and technique, go over individual parts & combine them to create a better band sound.  Learn different ways to approach a song while gaining confidence as a player.  Play & learn from an advanced level instructor.  Each participant receives access to our student portal where you'll be able to access all class materials.

Come get your groove on this summer with Groove Fundamentals! In this workshop you will explore techniques, phrasing, and rhythmic patterns to achieve a proper groove or feel in songs using your instrument or voice. If you are a vocalist, you will learn to use proper diaphragmic breathing when singing complex phrases, and exploring and expanding the current vocal range (to belt or not to belt) in a healthy way. If you are a bassists, you will learn how and when to use to correct bass technique for a given song, i.e. when to Slap, pick, or use fingerstyle. You will learn which finger to lead with when playing behind the beat, or a shuffle or swing feel. If you are a guitarist, you will develop a loose wrist to improve rhythm chops in groove-oriented music, i.e. when to mute, chicken scratch, or to sweep chords. You will learn how to use guitar, amp, and effect combos for various groove styles, as well as how to select your pick-up switch and tone balance for a given style. As a drummer, you will learn how to play behind the beat (fatback groove). You will learn how and when to use ghost notes and the right place to play them on the snare when playing funkier styles. As a keyboard player, you will learn to develop comping patterns common in groove styles. You will learn when to use or choose a Rhodes or Wurlitzer, and how to expand chord voicings. Come join us and have fun grooving to cool music! Bring your song suggestions!

This workshop covers a wide variety of rock & blues. Are you currently taking lessons? No experience or limited experience playing with others? This workshop is for you! Learn band dynamics! Learn the ins and outs of what's going on in each song. Determine what key the song is in, how to solo over the changes, find the right rhythm to play and sing along with the other instruments. For vocalists, this workshop will allow you to feel the songs & work on getting the right vocal accompaniment without having to rush thru each song. For guitarists, you will learn how to use technique and effects to compliment or lead the band's sound. For bassists, you will learn how to lay the rhythmic and harmonic foundation for the band. For drummers, you will also learn to lay the rhythmic foundation alongside the bassist, driving the band forward with percussion. For keyboardists, you will learn to enrich the band's sound with an assortment of synthesized sounds. Let's open that music door together. You'll have fun making music in a non-judgmental, welcoming environment.

Have you seen one of our Jazz workshops but felt afraid to jump in with no experience? This workshop will give you the fundamentals that you need to start playing jazz music in a friendly and relaxed environment. We will explore the most fundamental areas such as: Rhythmic feel in jazz music, traditional jazz chords/harmonies, how to play along with the band (or comping) in a swing situation and a brief introduction to the improvisation process.

This class will explore the differences between playing blues in a rock/folk context and playing it within a jazz framework. We will explore the characteristics that make the blues sound different in jazz music and will work on these elements one by one in order to incorporate those sounds into our playing. The focus will be on the harmonic changes and how it will provide the basic tools to improvise with a jazzy flavor. It's a great opportunity as a first approach to jazz music. All blues lovers are welcome to this workshop even if you don't have any experience with jazz before!

Looking to play some heavier music? This summer, join our Metal Magic workshop, which will be all about classic hard rock and heavy metal! Vocalists and instrumentalists will be guided through the intricacies of playing in a hard rock band. Learn to give your vocals power and range using falsetto and head tone. Learn bass techniques used by the greats such as Steve Harris, John Paul Jones, Geezer Butler, and Rudy Sarzo. Learn guitar techniques and effects that are necessary for creating a hard rock and metal sound. Learn to play drums with power and accuracy, and to groove and play fills of the greats such as Led Zeppelin. If you're looking to fill your summer with music from classic bands such as Foreigner and Black Sabbath, this workshop is for you! This workshop will be a fun and laid-back opportunity to learn hard rock and heavy metal, so bring your song suggestions!

In this class we will be playing and learning by heart some of the greatest all time Jazz standards. Tunes from: Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Cole Porter, Mile Davis, Thelonious Monk, and many other Jazz figures will be taken. We will focus on a short list of tunes, but exploring its critical elements deeply in order to fully understand the songs and be able to sound good both playing and improvising over them!

Are you familiar playing Jazz and feel in the mood to go further and become an advanced/seasoned player? This course is designed to take your abilities to the next level, exploring advanced elements of the genre. We will explore areas such as: Memorizing Jazz standards, playing blues variations, how to develop a solo over the tunes (more jazz scales and new chords), how to play Modal Jazz, Jazz Waltz, and Jazz Ballads. If you want to continue to increase your musicianship and musical skills, this will be a great course for you!

In this class, we will explore the main patterns and grooves of the two mainly played rhythms of Brazilian music: Bossa Nova and Samba. We will learn the difference between both by playing tunes of the traditional repertoire and learning every part of the groove. The focus will be on the rhythmic and harmonic vocabulary of these genres, and the goal is to learn how to play basic grooves and common variations within the rhythmic section instruments (bass, guitar, drums/percussion, vocals, and piano).

This course will explore the patterns and grooves of the two mainly played rhythms in Latin music: Bolero and Afro-Cuban rhythms (Son, Cha-cha, Danzon). We will learn the difference between them by playing tunes of the traditional repertoire and learning every part of the groove. The focus will be on the rhythmic and harmonic vocabulary of these genres, and the goal is to learn how to play basic grooves and common variations within the rhythmic section instruments (Bass, guitar, drums/percussion, vocals, and piano).

TERMS & CONDITIONS

We ask all workshop participants to please make every effort to attend all rehearsals.  If you're unable to attend any rehearsals, you are required to notify Music Makers NY via email musicmakersnewyork@gmail.com at least 48 hours in advance.  When registering, should you have a conflict with a rehearsal date, please make Music Makers aware of the conflict.  Not attending more than 2 rehearsals within an 8-week performance program can greatly affect the band as a whole.

Cancellation Policy: Once you submit the registration form & authorize payment to Music Makers NY your slot is guaranteed and reserved exclusively for you, therefore, all fees are non-refundable.  

Instrumentalists are guaranteed a slot for their particular instrument, not a vocal slot as well.

Performance Workshops:  We encourage everyone to take an active role in promoting their performance.
